A Clan Pestilence skaven force had occupied a key watchtower along the eastern frontier - enslaving the garrison and generally spreading their poxes and plagues. A dwarf force under Hornhelm Alemaster was dispatched to retake the tower. The skaven had cleverly deployed in a wide circle around the tower, forcing the dwarfs to deploy on the very edges of the board and give their stunty legs a workout on the long march to the tower in the center. The Skaven General's main problem would be trying to keep the watchtower garrisoned when his entire army is frenzied!
After some "fast" marching and some generally unproductive dwarf shooting on turn one, the skaven unleashed Plague twice with irresistible force and by the time the plague had run its course, a full 29 dwarfs from three infantry blocks, a slayer unit, and a bolt thrower had succumbed!!
On turn two a full unit of clan rats with a battle standard bearer charge a plague-depleted unit of dwarf warriors (new recruits - the Youngbeards led by Snorri Cleanshaven). And, in an epic battle that will be celebrated in many a dwarf tavern and skaven nest for centuries, they were still locked in combat when the game ended on turn six. Despite losing combat resolution round after round, the feisty young dwarfs refused to run in a classic demonstration of the usual stubbornness of their race.
A unit of dwarf miners dug their way onto the table near the watchtower and advanced. They defeated a unit of plague censors. They were charged by the frenzied clan rats occupying the watchtower. The miners defeated them in combat and pursued them to the very door of the watchtower. Unfortunately, the miners had given all they had. The unit of clan rats, that moved into the tower when the previous unit charged the miners, managed to defeat the miners in the ensuing combat and the miners fled and were run down.
Still, the dwarfs had one last chance at victory as their Lord with his few remaining longbeards surrounding him, having marched almost within reach of the watchtower, braced themselves for a charge from the Skaven general on the screaming bell and their accompanying unit. First the Grey Seer cast Plague upon the dwarfs with a roll of 17!!! But, the Runes were with Lord Alemaster as the dwarfs rolled exactly 17 on their four dispel dice. The bell rolled only two impact hits and promptly rolled a 1 and a 2 for the wounds. The longbeards held and the remaining unit of warriors charged into the flank of the skaven unit.
The dwarfs handily won the round of combat. Now, if the Skaven run (which they did) it would be possible for the dwarfs to run them down and also pursue far enough to charge the tower itself just 6 inches away. Alas, the tired dwarfs didn't have it left in them. The skaven unit escaped and a 5 inch pursuit move left the dwarfs just short.
An epic contest! Thanks, Lloyd for a great game!
