I've been reading alot about High Elves lately. I'm a huge fan of dragons, but they seem to be nerfed pretty bad with 8th Edition. Is there anyway or build that works for 8th Ed? There was a discussion about the Dragon Mage which said it's a mixed role... you have a mage who should stay out of combat and a dragon that should be right in there. Would a Prince on a Dragon be a better choice? I was thinking the lore of Life could keep healing wounds, but I hear complaints that the dragon doesn't survive the first round. I really like the model, but hate to field such an expensive 500-600+ model just to lose it before it does anything. Any thoughts... Jeff

Dragons are still useful, you just have to be more selective as to who you smash them into. I wouldn't bother with them in a 2000 pt game, as they will be the only thing worth shooting at and will die quick. In larger games, you will have scarier units out there like big hordes of white lions or something, and your dragon will not be as big of a target.
I would definitely stick with the mage on the dragon, as princes are just not scary enough in close combat to be worth it...

Well consider this. I never once fielded a Dark Elf tourny list without a dragon. 8th made them BETTER. Also go with the prince. Unless you make the unkillable Mage(etheral, and turns magic weapon into normal weapons) he will die once the drgon hits combat. So guess what happens. You waste points by having a model that both wants to be in combat and should never ever be in combat by choice. Go with a prince instead.

Big monsters, thunderstomp and a breath weapon. as poofy says, its nonsensical to put a mage on a monster that you want in combat. make the prince survival oriented by boosting his armor give him a lance and go to town.

I think that the dragon seeming nerfed is a result of the rest of the army getting better, not the dragon getting worse. ASF getting rerolls as well as the horde formation with spearmen have opened a whole new avenue of infantry-based play for High Elves.
Time was, nobody went to a tournament without a prince on a star dragon. Now, with the rest of our army getting a LOT better, the ascendancy of dragons has come to an end (just like in the fluff!).

So... how survivable does this sounds....
Prince on a Moon Dragon with Dragon Armour, Great Weapon, Longbow, Vambraces of Defense, & Dragonhelm.
If my calculations are correct, this gives him a 3+ re-rollable armour save & a 4+ ward save. It also gives him 4 S6 attacks which ASF due to Speed of Asuryan.
The Dragon gets a 5+ armour save due to it's scaly skin. It has 4 S5 attacks, D6 thunderstomp, and a S2 breath attack. This will cost 476 points (which is cheaper than 490pt Eltharion & Stormwing).
Any changes or suggestions?

That looks pretty good! And for a decent cost as well. I think the moon dragon has a 4+ scaly skin save, though.
The trick is not to send him into the front of fully ranked up units. Even with thunderstomp you will probably lose and the enemy will be steadfast even if you manage to win. Dragons are best used either combining a charge with some infantry or going solo on support units like war machines, archers and carelessly placed wizards.

Scratch what I said about the princes, that build does seem pretty scary. Not that expensive either (my Vamp lord is usually 400-450 points, on foot!). Watch out for cannons though if you are going after their war machines with it. They are pretty good at hitting things and since they count as template weapons they will hit both the rider and the dragon...
