(Although not technically part of the campaign, our game on Friday seemed to be a perfect add on to our Cairo or Bust series)
3000 points of Italian infantry, tanks, and motorcyclists under Chuck, Terry, and Steve advance into the Sinai only to run into a British Heavy Armored squadron under Temis (the 1500 points of survivors from the Rusiewat Ridge disaster) along with 1500 points of newly arrived US troops under Jeremy. Must be the Torch landings in North Africa have been put on hold while the US tries to stem the axis advance into the Mid East.
As usual, the Italians enjoyed wine and cheese before the fight - whining about the cheesy Allied force that included 11 shermans which outclass any armor the Italians can bring to the table by far. Despite the complaining, our battle cry is AVANTI!!!!!
We decide to test the green US troops. We bravely push forward with most of our force there, leaving only some artillery to protect the middle and putting Terry out on a limb to fend off the British armor with just 4 tanks and two infantry platoons.
US air and artillery fire takes a heavy toll of the advancing Italians. One motorcycle platoon is destroyed and two tank platoons are chewed up.
On the other flank, the British armor pushes over some rises and closes in on Terry's troops. Italian engineers grab their flamethrowers and leap out of their foxholes. They flame and assault two tank platoons, destroying four tanks! Meanwhile the semoventes take out another two. The British advance has been thwarted!
American direct fire is much less effective (because they are green troops??). Four Italian armored cars keep two platoons of Shermans and Stuarts tied up for two turns! Italian light tanks close on the US infantry defending the objective and unleash 18 MG shots. US infantry fail their morale test and leave the field. Italians hold the objective and win.
The Axis advance continues!
Of course these games would work better if we all remembered the rules. No one thought about the +2 to hit modifier the US infanty would get for being concealed in the open and gone to ground. See, they really were green troops!!
