The entire rest of that section refers to "the model" and the only thing that calls anything into question is the parenthetical (or a unit's). The only example cited in that paragraph is for cavalry, which I feel is the intention of that statement. Read the previous paragraph. A character would test seperately from the rest of the unit for characteristic tests.
I hate to go all Conrad on this, but I'm going to stand by the idea that you can't just toss one model into a unit and change the entire unit's characteristic for purposes of tests.
I don't even run those spells, and I feel that it's serious rule-bending and lawyering to try and argue that you can just add one powerful model to an otherwise weak unit in order to make their characteristic go up against Pit of Shades, Dwellers Below, etc.
Everyone who plays this game needs to put aside the rules tweaker and literalist in themselves, and consider the INTENTION of the rules. What, if a bunch of ghost hands burst out of the ground to grab your goblins, is your attached warboss going to run around punching them back down?

Ard boyz isn't about intention. It's all about RAW. It can be argued that having a character helps your unit in those tests. Ld is a characteristic isn't it? I don't want it to work like that and I don't run casters either. I'm not sure it works though. I have to look at it more but so far it seems a possibility that having a charcter boosts the unit.

By the way, if you look at the spells it says each MODEL takes the test. Not unit. So you go of the models InItiative not the units. If it says each unit touched then you would use the highest initiative in the unit.

I know they say it's not a characteristic test, but they word it the same way(use the highest). Which at this point is irrelevant. Can anyone even think of something tht makes a UNIT take a characteristic test?

My discussion came up when I tried to pit of shades a plague furnace. I said it would be automatically destoyed because it has no I value. We had a friendly discussion about it and it didnt go off so it wasnt an issue.
It seems fine for the PP to use his intit for the furnace as it is his mount. However, for a horde unit of Temple guard to use a skink chiefs initiative for pit of shades seems dumb. It cant be how it works but I think the rule is very unclear. It will be interesting to see how the next level at ard boyz it wil come up.
Poofy, There are some Nurgle toughness tests on the unit I think. I guess in those cases you would use the highest toughness but in a Purple sun you wouldnt. That seems the RAW. Either way I wish it were clearer.

Alright well Brian got me all riled up for nothing. I would agree that, since the furnace is a "mount" of sorts, you would use whatever the highest characteristic there.
Can we still be friends?

Sorrry to get you riled up tony! I had no idea;)
I just hate how that paragraph is stated. It really should only apply to cav or mounted models. Bernie( My scaven opponent) was right in this case and I am glad it didnt make a difference in our match. He stomped me good gamewise for even suggesting it. God do I hate learning a new system.
