Flames of War Battle Report
Operation Cobra: Barkmann’s Corner scenario 07/24/13
Battle group Barkmann/SS Fearless Veteran
US 32nd Armored Regiment, Dog Company/Confident Trained
Players: Antholin & ColHogan (Jeff M & Jeff V)
Round 1: The American’s, after seeing their lead tank destroyed start pushing through bocage hedgerow, several tanks become mired down in the tangle that is the bocage, but others move on into the adjacent field. The lone Panther moves up, takes and shot and destroys the US Company’s warrior, Staff Sgt. Lafeyette G. Pool.
Round 2: Another platoon of Sherman’s roll up to join the fight, while some other tanks break out from the tangled roots of the bocage, and one is left behind. Some tanks of the new platoon manage to push through, while a couple become hopelessly entrenched in the bocage. Barkmann maneuvers his Panther to the closest intersection taking a shot, and destroying another Sherman.
Round 3: The last Sherman platoon arrives into the battle. Other Sherman’s manage to successfully navigate the bocage and mend their way towards the staging area with the other tanks. The Panther takes down another Sherman, from a double bail, and it flees the field.
Round 4: More Sherman’s become unstuck and race towards their comrades, while the first grouping of tanks in the field start pushing through onto the next roadway, with about half becoming stuck, and a couple breaking out to put smoke on Barkmann. Barkmann takes two shots, and even with his mighty re-rolls, manages to completely miss the mark. Stormtrooping back towards the grenadiers, Barkmann sets up for the next round.
Round 5: The Sherman’s continue to push up through the field and hedgerows, some untangling from the mass of bocage, while others make it onto the roadway. The mighty Panther can get no shots without exposing himself to side shots from the ever increasing number of enemy tanks. The grenadiers take up positions more positions around the objective with two squads moving into the house.
Round 6: The US armor continues to push ever forward, grinding the bocage under their finely wrought Detroit steel. Two tanks are able to put smoke down on the Panther. Barkmann is not close enough to deal any damage to the oncoming armor without exposing himself to severe counter fire. He takes up position near the objective and prepares himself. The grenadiers dig in and await the US armor onslaught.
Round 7: Several Sherman’s take shots at the infantry in the house, managing to knock out one stand with their main gun. Barkmann retaliates by destroying 1 Sherman at point blank range across the hedgerow. He then stromtroops back around the house, using the French architecture as cover.
Round 8: The 2nd IC manages to punch through the bocage and whips around to Barkmann’s exposed flank. With one lucky shot, he penetrates the already damaged side armor of the Panther ace’s valiant cat. A fire power test finishes the job. The grenadiers are then overwhelmed by the sheer ferocity of the Shermans. Having no effective weapons of their own, they give up the objective and the US Armor wins the day.
6-1 American victory
We turned around and were able to knock out another game with the same scenario, players switching sides. This time, the German player was able to successfully knock out several Sherman’s in the first two turns, making a rather nasty line of burned out hulks to navigate through. The US players was unable push armor through in any good fashion. Multiple skill tests failed each and every round to untangle the tanks from the bocage and cross it. As such, only 4 tanks were able to finally push through and get close to the objective. Barkmann was able to deal with these few paltry tanks in good order, and the Americans had to quit the field, as their time was near up, and no tanks were close enough to push toward the goal.
6-1 German victory.
Both games were won by ColHogan
