Flames of War Battle Report
Michael Wittmann’s Wild Ride Scenario 07/17/13
British Reluctant Vet Motor Company
Michael Wittmann-SS Fearless Vet
Players: Antholin & ColHogan (Jeff M & Jeff V)
All British vehicles start bailed out & Brit’s without leaders, unable to move regularly, only in assault.
Round 1: Michael Wittmann rolls up on the bailed out British column, and immediately attacks. Destroying a Firefly and 1 Cromwell. The British force are able to re-mount some vehicles, and unpin 1 platoon. They then direct fire smoke on Wittmann.
Round 2: Wittmann finishes off the lone Cromwell, and makes his way towards the infantry. More vehicles are remounted, and another platoon unpins. A Piat team takes 1 shot at Wittmanns mighty Tiger, but only manages to scratch the paint. Direct fire smoke is used again.
Round 3: Wittmann pushes up to the closest enemy platoon, an infantry squad, and opens up with 4 machine gun shots. Re-rolling two failed hits, Wittmann manages to take out an infantry stand, and then assaults. Unable to take a stand out, the infantry, along with halftracks fall back, while Wittmann pushes forward to consolidate. The British are able to finish remounting the last of their bailed out vehicles, and take a Piat shot against Wittmann, not breaking through. Smoke is tried again, but to no effect.
Round 4: Wittmann pushes up, machine guns the same infantry platoon, and then assaults. This time he is able to kill off a stand, the infantry fall back, and Wittmann consolidates, capturing a halftrack in the process. Another Piat shot rings out, no effect.
Round 5: Wittmann, using the same tactic, along with re-rolling misses, machine guns the infantry, assaults and finally breaks the platoon. The British respond with 3 shots form a 6 pdr AT gun, but to no avail.
Round 6: The Tiger ace moves up, hits the platoon with several shots from his MG, not claiming any kills, but then assaults. The Tiger mercilessly crushes another stand under its mighty treads, and the infantry fall back. Piat and 3 more shots from the AT gun try to subdue the killing cat, but miss the mark.
Round 7: Wittmann continues to press the attack, machine gunning and assaulting the remaining infantry, managing to push the platoon to the breaking point, but the British infantry rally, and manage to motivate for another round of combat. More Piat and AT shots ring out, and still do not find the soft underbelly of the mighty cat.
Round 8: Not wanting to push his luck, Wittmann continues to machine gun and assault the last of the infantry, finally managing to break them. The British again fire their AT gun, but can only get 1 of the 2 gun platoon to line up for firing, and still does not hurt the Tiger.
Round 9: The tank ace rolls up to engage the AT guns, and does not score any kills. Wittmann contemplates an assault, but 6 shots of 11 AT rating in defensive is not to his liking. The British again attempt the 6 pdr guns, but are unlucky in their gamble.
Round 10: Pouring 3 main guns shots into the AT platoon, and re-rolling misses, Wittmann destroys the 6 pounder guns, while their faithful Lloyd carriers flee the field. On the British turn, the company breaks, after having lost 4 platoons, and with no command structure in place, they flee the field of battle. Wittmann wins the day, and buys his comrades invaluable time to prepare for the next fight.
German win 6-1
We played two games of the same scenario, back to back. The first game was a lot of fun, and showed us just how fast and quick this setup could be played. The second go through, was very fast paced, with the British remounting most of their vehicles early on, but still losing their Firefly & Cromwell’s at the onset. A lone Piat team was able to successfully assault Wittmann, but could not break his top armor. This second play through ended in 4 rounds with a German victory, due to some very early pushes by ColHogan, and consistently pushing the infantry back. All in all, a very fun mission.
