They almost missed it. Even the legendary thoroughness of the Order of St. Hessen almost failed the civilized world. The Librarians and Scribes of the Order have been collecting, compiling, analyzing, and preserving data for centuries. As they studied the progress of this alarming Evil Alliance, there seemed to be no patterns amid the destruction. They carefully studied the time and location of each battle and raid. They compiled extensive lists of all of the looted goods.
But, finally, one young, novice acolyte began to piece the puzzle together - the Dread Necromancer of Stienbrenneria, High Priest of the budding Evil Empire, (aka Destroyer of Competitive Balance, Devourer of Free Agents, and Sox Bane - and known to his "friends" as Hank) is building the Engine of Darkness!!!!!!!!!!! All of this, the alliance, the raids, the looting and pillaging, are only a diversion to hide his true purpose. There, among the long lists of stolen loot, lay the clues - the Axle of Foley, the Wheel of For' Toon, and the list goes on.
The Plains of Oblivion are home to strange fissures that emit power surges that blow as winds over the plain. Some of these winds have no effect. Some cause great euphoria, inspirations of genius, and healing. Others cause madness, death, or destruction. The Order has studied the Plains for centuries. Their research of the ancient texts shows that these power surges can be harnessed in two ways. Constructing the Engine of Light can channel these powers for good (Creating a great Age of Enlightenment throughout the world) while building the Engine of Darkness can channel these powers to evil purposes (Creating a horrifying Age of Madness and Doom). Many of the components needed to build either engine have been thought to have vanished centuries ago. Apparently not!
Now a huge host of armies of the Evil Alliance is marching on the Plains of Oblivion. It is most likely that they bring the Engine of Darkness with them. If they reach the Plains and harness its power then the civilized world is DOOMED.
To reach the Plains of Oblivion, the evil host must cross the River Harma and march through the Pass of Gheddon. There is no other access.
The Ancient Texts reveal a way (hopefully!) to end the power surges. The most powerful wizards of the civilized world must gather and perform the extensive rites. If they are to succeed, they need TIME.
The alarm has been spread throughout the civilized world. The Evil Alliance must be delayed. We must buy time for the Wizards even if we must spend the blood of our kindred to do so. All armies, all nations MUST hasten to the Harma-Gheddon!! TO ARMS! TO ARMS! NOW is the TIME! The Very EXISTENCE of the World as we Know it is at Stake! Cry "Havoc!" and let slip the dogs of war!!
