Warboss Grubbynutz shifted from his sitting position in the battlewagon to let rip with a particularly large fart. Even in the speeding, open-topped wagon the stench hung for what seemed like an eternity. The Nobz wrinkled their noses in disgust, but none dared say anything to the boss. Grubbnutz grinned, exposing huge canines upon the tip of which the remnants of his morning grot-burger still hung. It was good to be boss.
It had been 4 days since the warband had split off from the main group of Orks on Monody’s surface and for the most part it had been boring. Nothing but farmsteads and scattered mining outposts existed out here in the harsh environs of the Northern Continent. Still, Klickinklak had ensured the Warboss that there were prizes out here well worth his time, robots from the dawn of time that moved, thought and talked. The Mek had babbled about them being from some human recreation spot in millennia past. Grubbynutz, being a true Goff, didn’t give a flying squig about such things, but the Bad Moons would pay handsomely for such nonesense, and more teef meant more Kanz for the warband. It was worth a little boredom to be able to command his own dred mob.
Suddenly, the little device Klickinklak had cajoled Grubbynutz into installing in his eardrum crackled to life, the mek had something to say.
“Boss! We’ze comin’ up on da site now! But boss, dere’s beakies already here!”
Grubbynutz roared in glee. Maybe this wouldn’t be so boring after all!
Ashurbanipal and Grubbynutz face off over an objective. Hmmm... Wonder what this robot was used for?
Tech marines aren't known for their compassion
Nor are painboyz
First turn/deployment roll: Hands of Vengeance win.
Terrain was scattered pretty evenly across the table as you can see in this pic. Objectives were likewise scattered across the center of the table. BBH chose the edge with the hill and the colliseum, leaving me with the two hills (one of which was big enough to screen my wagon - thank you Ronald Reagan!) on my side. The area around the central ruin was looking to be the site of some fierce battles.
Deployment:
Hands of Vengeance deploy a single rhino (with a tactical squad inside) as far forward as possible, forcing the orks to deploy deep in their zone. A chapter master lurks back in the hills in his deployment zone, no doubt scheming to use his orbital bombardment on the unsuspecting orks. The orks responded by putting down 2 slugga mobs and the big mek, making sure that both mobs were covered by the KFF. I just love putting 61 models on the table in Dawn of War
Deployment from Marine angle
Deployment from Ork side
Now that were set up, it was time for me to try and seize the initiative…
Which I did!
Me accepting my good luck like a true gentleman.
Ork Turn 1:
Making the most of the initiative-seizing, my entire army (minus the black baron, who was outflanking) rolled onto the board. The nob convoy and the remaining slugga mob came in over to the right while the lootaz took the hill to the left. The kanz came in dead center to try and use the meks KFF for cover. The slugga mobz on table move forward.
In the shooting phase most of my army decided to forgo shooting to run (since most of them have nothing but sluggaz and my only on-board target was a rhino, this was not a difficult choice). The only things that didn’t run were the kanz, who got a bead on the rhino and unleashed three rokkitz, of which two hit! Unfortunately, I rolled a 1 and a 2 for armor pen and the rhino escaped unscathed.
Top of turn 1
Space Marine Turn 1:
The space marines arrive in style, with two drop pods burning down through the atmosphere to crash into the ground around the forward ork squad. The rhino slammed on the gas to burn through the ruin to disgorge ten more tac marines. The forward squad is now looking down the barrel of no less than 30 space marines, 2 of which have flamers. Brace yourself lads! Terminators waddle onto the board along with their librarian babysitter in tow.
Space marine shooting phase sees the chapter master unleash an orbital bombardment on the warboss’s battlewagon, only to see it scatter harmlessly off the board. Meanwhile, the rest of the space marine army focuses fire on the forward slugga mob. After 8 storm bolters, 2 missile launchers, 2 lascannons, an assault cannon, 21 bolters 6 bolt pistols. two flamers and 1 meltagun, only 17 orks die. This is slightly below average. Being fearless, the orks laugh off their (considerable) losses.
The front mob tanks a pummelling but stays fearless!
Bottom of 1
Ork Turn 2:
The Black baron is uninterested in the battle and decides to wait it out.
The sluggas surge forward in order to threaten as many space marines as possible in the assault phase. The mek leaves the forward squad and joins the second squad The Nobz move 13” in their battlewagon, disembark, leaving me still a goodly distance from the action. Meganobz zoom up the right flank
Shooting phase sees the lootaz put an impressive 2 penetrating and 2 glancing hits on the dread across the table. The intervening terrain had other ideas however, and the dreadnought isn’t hurt at all. Orks decide to declare their waagh this turn, hoping to deal a fatal blow to the scoring units which just landed on their doorstep. Nobz are able to close the necessary distance,
In the assault phase the two slugga mobz and the nobz steamroll the space marines. A few sluggaz die here and there, but it is nothing compared to the losses inflicted on the astartes. Only 8 tactical marines survive, falling back into the killing zone around the terminators. The forward (depleted) slugga mob advances to keep as many falling-back marines as possible within 6”. The other slugga mob consolidates up as well, looking to threaten the terminators next turn. The nobz hide valiantly behind a drop pod.
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaghh! (top of two)
Space Marine Turn 2:
Last tactical squad must be attending the same party as Da Black Baron and decide to stay off the board. All falling back squads are within 6” of orks and continue to fall back. None leave the board yet, though.
The chapter master legs it to join up with the termies (not quite making it) and the dreadnought reposition for better shots at the kanz. The rhino in the ruins tries to jet away but immobilizes itself.
Though all the tacticals are running away, they are all are also within 12” of the forward slugga mob, who they duly dispatch with flamers, bolt pistols and bolters. The terminators and the dreadnoughts blast 8 orks from the second slugga squad, leaving around 18-20 of them alive.
Bottom of two
Ork Turn 3:
This turn opens with my meganobz and second slugga mob (with their attendant big mek) moving up to get into assault with the terminators. The rearward slugga mob moves to smack the rhino down.
Shooting sees almost nothing happen, with the kanz trying to blow up the rhino so the sluggas don’t have to assault it, but they miss. Lootas target the dread again and despite a goodly number of hits, cannot seem to get through the armor (curses!). The rearward squad shrugs and wrecks the vehicle with glances before the nob can strike (which is a good thing, orks don’t like explosions).
The meganobz and sluggaz crash into the terminators and 2 unfortunate tactical marines (who were fleeing until they got swarmed by the sluggaz). 7 terminators and the 2 tactical marines are killed, while the terminators strike back, killing 4 sluggaz and wiping outing the meganobz. The sluggaz take 3 fearless wounds and stay in combat.
This is a major boon to the orks as it means that the 6 remaining tactical marines (being within 6” of the orks) will likely flee off the board next turn.
Space Marine Turn 3:
The space marines reserves decide to come in, with a drop pod pulling a ballsy deepstrike to land right next to the lootaz and one of the rearward objectives. The previously fleeing tacticals flee, leaving the freshly arrived troops as the only scoring units left in the space marine army. The chapter master moves to get an assault and bail the terminators out.
The dreadnoughts open fire on the kanz, who are in position to threaten the tactical squad, blasting the close combat arm off of one and destroying another. The drop tactical squad flames the hell out of the lootaz and kills all but 4. The 4 remaining lootaz pass their leadership and decide to stay.
In close combat the chapter master, librarian and the three remaining termies finish off the slugga boyz and the big mek, losing two termies in the process. They consolidate back, making my nobz sad.
No pics this turn because we were obviously very excited.
Ork Turn 4:
The baron arrives from reserves, jetting up to one of the drop pods and missing with his rokkit. Oh well, he usually is awesome, so he can get a mulligan here.
Okay, time to start thinking about objectives. My last slugga squad and the kanz moves back to intercept the tactical squad (kill the last troops!) while the nobz move forward to finish off the space marine HQ (and that last terminator).
Shooting sees a space marine killed by a kan rokkit and the lootaz blasting the lascannon arm off of a dread.
In assault, one of the tactical’s combat squads is mashed by the sluggaz. The sluggaz (being one of my last scoring units) consolidate to claim one of the objectives. The other combat squad loses a marine to the kanz but they also manage a damage result on the kanz (a stunned, downgraded to shaken) so the combat is tied. Nobz are out of charge range from the terminators.
Top of 4
Space Marine Turn 4:
The dreadsand the last termy take aim at the Warboss and his nobz and kill… one. Yay for invul saves and feel no pain (which, incidentally, a warboss gets against krak missiles).
In assault, the kanz kill another tactical marine and the space marines decide to fall back.
Bottom of 4
Ork Turn 5
The nobz and the Warboss rush forward to get into assault with three amigos (librarian, chapter master and the last terminator) while the kanz attempt to chase down the tactical squad.
The lootaz kill one drop pod with their super-accurate deffguns while the black baron kills another one. No more storm bolters pestering my troops!
In assault, the Nobz and Boss charge their opposite numbers. The librarian kills a wounded nob and the terminator finishes off another. Grubbynutz takes a wound from the chapter master but promptly slices the humie in half. The terminators make their saves against the rest of the nob attacks. Stupid termies. The nobz lose by one but make their leadership check.
Top of five
Space Marine Turn 5
The space marine librarian uses gate of infinity to jump away towards the rearward objective, hoping to deny the orks there while the dreadnoughts handle the nobz (who are also near enough to an objective). Unfortunately, the last terminator is lost in the deepstrike.
The dreads shoot down another nob (leaving three and the boss). Then they charge. Being shooty dreads, they don’t do so well. No wounds are caused by them, but one is killed by the Warboss.
The roll for 6th turn comes up a 6! Another turn will be played. The fate of the space marines is now sealed.
Turns 6-7
The lootaz and the sluggaz open fire on the librarian, who dies in an avalanche of poorly-aimed lead. The warboss rips dread to pieces.
Meanwhile, the last fleeing tactical marine, who by now has run most of the way across the table, is mercilessly gunned down by a kan rokkit.
Victory to the Orks!
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHH!!!
Orks After-Action Report:
That went very well. I think my army performed admirably. Seizing the initiative was really big for me as it meant my squads were centrally located before the marines came down, forcing them to either choose between ceding me the central objectives or coming down in my face. They chose the latter and were stomped on for their trouble.
MVP: My meganobz. Contrary to what you might think by their short lifespan (they lived to the top of three), actually did very well. Adding their own power klaw attacks to the attacks of the slugga mob nob they killed 7 terminators. Sure they died in the return strikes, but if I have to lose 4 mega nobz to see that the termies are neutered, I will gladly do it.
My learning moment would be to pay attention to the objectives early on. Almost settling for a draw on turn 5 to a deepstriking terminator librarian was quite a wake-up call. Remembering your opponent’s mobility when choosing when and where to stake out your objectives is a key goal in this game.
