The Dwarfs of Khazad-Rut learned that a Lord of Change which had killed one of Kazad-Rut's runelords (about 200 years ago, pretty recently by dwarf accounts, and a still open Grudge int he Rut Book of Grudges) had been spotted with a sizeable force of non-themed demons. The Dwarfs marched to settle the grudge, and to cut off the head of the Lord of Change! (this is one of the new missions, where both sides are going after the opposing general's head)
Very shortly thereafter, the Defenders of Kazad-Rut were astonished to see the stragglers come limping home - first the massive block of Ironbreakers (19) with their Thane and Champion still unharmed! (failed a Ld 9 check and ran away), followed by a medium block of Longbeards (16) (failed a Ld 8 check), then 7 quarrelers (failed an Ld 7 check), A squad of 10 Dwarf Warriors (the description of doughty hardly applies here) (failed a Ld 9 check).
Back at the battlefield, the Dwarfs were flailing ineffectually. A small group of Khorne flesh hounds ran into the war machine park. In desperation, the Cannon was blown up - it caused 7 hits, but then only one wound, which a hound did not save. Not a good trade of 150+ points of Cannon! The runepriest then fled and died, with the war machine crews. The dastardly Flamers of Tzeentch had obviously prayed to their nefarious god, and rolled shooting attacks like fiends!
Tzeentch was looking after his wards that day. There were three Tzeentch spellcasters, and only one miscast during the entire bloody battle. Not only that, but the one miscast did not harm, and would have allowed the other side to cast a spell - the Weaver of Fates has a cruel sense of humor! Dwarfs have no spells to cast!
The Dwarf Lord again proved his worth - his unit and the remaining Longbeards mulched khorne flesh hounds, Plague Bearers, Bloodletters, and generally any unit change came within range (of course, with a 3" move, that's not a large area). At the end of the battle, both generals still had their heads (though the Lord of Change was down to one wound, which the Dwarfs shall loudly proclaim!) and Demons ran rampant throughout the entire battlefield.
Ouch! Brian made no mistakes, and my dice were dismal. Still, I had two very large expensive blocks on the table at the end, so it was not a total loss.
More Grudges shall be entered in the Book!
