The Dwarfs of Khazad-Rut learned of vast hoards of gold piled in the ruined lizardman city of Castletepec. That is not a fit place for gold to lie- it should instead glitter in the halls of Khazad Rut! Therefore, the Dwarfs marched on Castletepec, little knowing the new dangers of that place. Upon their arrival in the swampy ruins, the Dwarfs immediately set to digging for gold. The inhabitants were not pleased, and that evening a massive force, under the command of Matt, charged the dwarf lines.
Apparently, the city was a home of a paranoid Slann, for he brought his retinue of no less than thirty Temple Guard with him. Salamanders slunk through the jungle, steam hissing from their jaws, hordes of skinks flitted from shadow to shadow, and two massive stegadons roared in anger as they saw the squat forms in front of them.
The Dwarfs had come in force, however, and had many Dwarfs present to carry home the gold. Slayers spied the massive Stegadons and dreamed of fighting a worthy monster. Longbeards grumbled about being distracted from collecting gold, put down their shovels and hoisted their shields. The Dwarf lord Gryvn Gnoll assembled his Hammerers about him, and stared defiantly at the advancing horde.
The entire lizard force moved forward as one, and the lizards used several tricks that no-one had seen before. The salamander’s fire unerringly tore into the ranks of Dwarfs, rendering even the strongest of armor useless. Only the dwarf rune of Grungni, which glowed white-hot under the punishment, proved of any defense to the Salamander’s molten fury. The lizard’s Engine of the Gods flared, and a dome of energy surrounded the lizard forces.
Then the dwarfs struck back. The mightiest of the Stegadons, an ancient, took two boltthrower shots through the eyes and crashed immediately to the ground, the priest on its back leaping clear. The Gyrocopter chased skinks through the trees, steaming some to their doom, and the Gryvn Gnoll stomped straight forward into the path of the rest of the lizard army.
The forces struck together with a mighty crash, and no-one fled. The lizards, with their cold-blooded patience, and the Dwarfs with their insane resolution, stood toe-to-toe and slaughtered each other as the evening wore on. The remaining Stegadon was slaughtered immediately by the Dwarf Lord, whose weapon made a mockery of the toughened hide of the stegadon, and then of the skink chief, and the saurus Champion, who stood in his way. Temple Guard, with their improved armor, stood despite the hordes of attacks, and minced Dwarfs with halberds. The salamanders kept frying any dwarf on the outskirts, and proved impossible to shoot. The salamanders spit fire twelve times, and never misfired. The gyrocopter pilot was wounded many times by tiny darts, and succumbed to skink poison.
Finally, the right flank of the Dwarfs performed a slow wheel despite the constant nagging of skink blowpipes and crashed into the Temple Guard. No-one ran even then, but temple guard and dwarf bodies lay heaped on all sides, more Temple Guard than Dwarf. The Hammerers were cut down to the dwarf, but their Lord survived, and at the end of the battle the Lizards were forced to retreat, barely defeated, back into the jungle.
Overview: Minor Dwarf win. New Salamanders are very powerful, and the better armor save on Saurus and Temple Guard is a huge benefit - on Temple Guard, it allows them to use their Halberd and still have a good save - that's significant. The Slann's ability to miscast does balance things out a bit, however.
