After months of waiting and unforeseen delays, the latest base set for Legend of the Five Rings, Emperor Edition, is finally upon us!
...almost!
For completeness, here are the two announcements made recently by AEG explaining the situation:
www.l5r.com/news/emperor-edition-release-dates/
www.l5r.com/news/emperor-edition-clarifications/
To summarize, Emperor Edition will have a staggered release. Already available are stripped down demo decks, completely free of charge while stocks last - pop into the store and ask about them today! Booster packs will be available from Stronghold Stores (which Triple Play is) from January 27th. Starter decks will be available from Stronghold Stores from February 17th. The general release of Emperor Edition is February 27th, when all stores will be available to sell the product.
What does this mean? Well, AEG are attempting to give local game stores that stock L5R a head-start on Emperor Edition by providing them with almost a month-long period of exclusivity. This is a great move on their part at a time when stores continue to lose sales to eBay and online retailers, and is a wonderful opportunity for players to support their local store and get their hands on the shiny new cards before anyone else!
Due to the nature of this release and the fact that not everybody will be able to get their hands on the cards immediately, AEG have taken the brave move of essentially allowing their players to print their own base set cards and use them for tournament play. For the next two months, players can print of and use a special version of Emperor Edition dubbed 'Kolat Edition' and use those cards in sanctioned official tournaments. The PDF can be found here:

Of course, many of us will be buying our cards as soon as they can, so if you have an actual version of the card, you're welcome to use it. Opening up tournaments to include these proxies does help ensure a fairer playing environment for the next two months.
As always, if anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Thanks,
Mark
