We are looking for a few more players for Twilight Imperium this Sunday. Fantasy Flight released a new expansion that contains a “historic” scenario for the game. This scenario depicts the fall of the race that ruled the galaxy at Mecatol Rex, the planet at the center of the galaxy. I would like to give this a spin. A few details:
1) Time: This scenario is not governed by victory points and ends when a certain number of rounds are completed or when someone fulfills their objective. The talk on BGG is that this scenario is not quite a long as a regular game, but still will take a while to complete.
If you want to join, please commit to a play time from 10-6 (including lunch break). Also, analysis paralysis is a bummer in a game of this length. Please understand that I will act to prod the game forward.
2) Number of players: The game supports up to 7 players (with one faction in the center of the galaxy). The board is pre-set based on the number of players we get – so if you would like to play please let me know as soon as possible so we can setup based on the number of players that will play. If we get 8 I will sit out and act as a GM.
3) Politics and tabletalk: Alliances and backstabbing are part of this game. Think Diplomacy or Game of Thrones. This scenario actually has a “secret alliance” mechanic that allows for secret betrayals of your allies. So this isn’t the type of game to take anything personally. ;D
So if interested please let me know, if you haven’t already responded on facebook.

I've always wanted to try the game. Mind having a newbie join in?

Sure transplanar, if you can be around for this time period you are welcome to join us. Have you been to the Wednesday or Sunday game session before?

Yes that was an epic close game. I also like the hidden objectives and the treaties versus the victory points in the standard game. I truly felt a sense of paranoia as everyone started ammasing their fleets around my territory.
I have to admit I got lucky with the objective handout. (Chuck was the loyalist, and nobody got the conquer Mecatol Rex or Quann objectives.)
I will probably do a writeup on BGG. It would be fun to run this again with the full 7 people, provided everyone has played before.

For my first time playing, I really enjoyed the game, and I think this scenario works quite well, particularly for new players.
I would say, though, that it would be better in the future to minimize the pre-game explanation, as I found myself able to pick on the game more quickly by seeing it in action then by a lengthy explanation. The main caveat would be to explain some of the rules that are not as intuitive, such as command points and how you cannot move a unit if it is on a space with a command token on it.
In retrospect, I would say if we played more aggressively early on it would be to the benefit of a few of us (particularly me), as I found that building units is more important than getting upgrades, and mobility upgrades (particularly for destroyers and cruisers) are essential given how the movement rules work.
