There were two rules I was sure I understood today, but I got over-ruled on both today during practice games. Am I right about the two following rules or not?
1. A Squad of Space marines can split into combat squads when it disembarks from a drop pod. i.e. I can put a squad of ten in a drop pod and then have then function as two combat squads.
Codex Space Marines - pg. 51 - 3rd paragraph under Combat Squad entry = "The one exception to this is a unit that arrives by drop pod. The player can choose to split such a unit into combat squads when it disembarks from the drop pod"
2. A single lightning claw allows the wielder to reroll failed to wound rolls.
Core Rules pg. 42 - under lighting claws entry -" A lighting claw is a power weapon and it also allows the wielder to re-roll any failed roll to wound"

1. Correct. The most effective abuse I think would be to put a veteran squad with 5 combi flamers and 5 combimeltas. Split them into combat squads. Fry the vehicle first and them flame them as best as you can. 2. Correct. I already told you about my opinion. One lightning claw lets you reroll wounds. If you have two, that simply gives you the extra attack and you get to reroll to wounds.
I am no rules lawyer so the forum is welcome to debate my thoughts!

Oh crap, Jeremy I owe you an apology! You should have whipped out that codex on the spot and said "shut up tony! read it and weep!"

My appologies as well. The claw seems wrong too me still, but ultimately, so be it. As too the drop pod thing, I didn't know there was a special rule under drop pods that allowed for it, I was just going by combat squaring rules (note the ability to do so in the GK codex yet distinctive lack of drop pods)

The entire point of taking a lightning claw is for the reroll wound. It's in the rule book. The only reason for you take two is to get the +1 attack.

Apparently it carries where your looking, butthe first unit I flipped the book open too offer a power weapon or lightning claw for the same points. Didn't make much sense to take a regular power weapon otherwise. But suppose GW has an innate ruling against using logic

Mostly its a personal choice for the person. If you take the power weapon though it will mostly be for modeling purposes.

Thanks for the clarification.
There is no need for apologies, but thanks anyway. I haven't played the game long enough to really know how many of the rules work in practice. When I have a question I usually search on the DakkaDakka forum for answers... which I have learned only goes so far. Is there a better source? Does GW have some kind of moderated forum that deals with the rules, etc?

Mostly its a personal choice for the person. If you take the power weapon though it will mostly be for modeling purposes. Not really. Power weapons can get get an extra attack from a free bolt pistol whereas to get an extra attack for a lightning claw you have to pay for a second claw. So essentially you get +1 attack with a power weapon and reroll to wounds with the claw. Seems to be an even trade (though most people just go with the power weapon as they are more readily available in the box sets). Sadly no. They had a series of public forums but stopped offering them several years ago. They were crazy places and the moderation was what some would consider lax (not me), but I had posts answered by GW staff members on several occasions. It was awesome. As of right now, Dakka is one of the best places for the rules debates. Some really sharp people there. The moderation team also lets them run with the debate. If you haven't already, check out the FAQ section of the GW website. It has some good stuff there.
