I tried out a demo of the game tonight at club and it was a lot of fun. I was wondering what the cycle schedule is if it has one (like Type 2 in magic)

I tried out a demo of the game tonight at club and it was a lot of fun. I was wondering what the cycle schedule is if it has one (like Type 2 in magic) It's worth stating that it was a bastardized demo, but still demo enough to get a general idea of the flow of the game and general basics. Still, it is quite a wonderful CCG with a lot of potential for good group games.

L5R rotates its base set roughly every two years - each card contains a kanji in the bottom left or right corner, letting you know which edition the card is legal for, and some expansions overlap, meaning they'll contain two kanji (commonly referred to as 'dual-bugged') and be legal for multiple editions. We're coming towards the end of Celestial Edition at the moment, with the next base set, Emperor Edition, releasing towards the end of the year.
The latest expansion, Before the Dawn, was released this week, and is dual bugged, meaning it will be tournament legal for roughly three years, making it a great place to start.

Well, you're good anyway, as you'll have cards you can use to the end of the year. Also, like many other games, base sets tend to be mostly reprints of cards from earlier base sets or expansions, but no information is available yet on what specific cards will be in Emperor Edition-
Picking up EE-bugged cards only will certainly give you the best value, as the cards will be tournament legal for the maximum amount of time. However, it would be extremely difficult to build a competitive Celestial-era deck using only EE cards - the card pool obviously isn't big enough for that.
