Andy and I finally got to play the Collector's Edition of War of the Ring last Sunday!
The fellowship had awful trouble getting from Rivendel to Lorien, and was discovered by the forces of Sauron before they even got a chance to enter Moria. From that point on they were doggedly followed by Nazgul. Gandalf the Grey sacrificed himself to keep the ring bearers safe from the minions. When the fellowship finally arrived in Lorien, Boromir, Gimly and Aragorn left for Gondor and Merry was sent to the North to warn the dwarves of the impending Easterling attacks.
Legolas lead the three remaining hobbits out of Lorien, but when the fellowship was cowardly ambushed right outside of Lorien the elf was killed and Peppin was ordered to go back to Lorien. The dark forces mounted an attack on three fronts. A large Sauron force was gather right outside Minas Tirith, Easterlings attacked the Northern Dwarf areas and Saruman's forces attacked Rohan. Gandalf the White appeared in Fangorn and mobilized the Ents to try and eliminate the forces from Orthanc, but they were ultimately unsuccessful. Gandalf rode to Minas Tirith while Sarumans forces where able to take Helms Deep and the other Rohan territories. This proved to be a fatal blow for the Free People. Gandalf lead a mixed Rohan/Gondor army to try and free Rohan, but this left the door open to Mordor forces to start the siege on Minas Tirith.
Meanwhile, Frodo, Sam and Gollum had been able to rush to mount Doom as Sauron had diverted his attention to the wars in Middle Earth. In Moria, the mouth of Sauron appeared and all of a sudden there was a serious danger to Lorien. Gandalf rode with all due haste and arrived just in time, but it was clear that the free people were losing the war. Of course, if only Frodo could get rid of the ring before...
In the end, he could not. The urge to use the ring to hide himself from the minions of Mordor was too much, and then the urge to just keep the ring save and for himself became more and more of a better idea, and the path up the mountain became harder and harder. In the end, as Frodo sat down at the foot of mount doom in desperation, the northern strongholds of the Dwarves and the cities of Rohan were overrun by the shadow and all was lost.
But I had fun. This is one awesome game.
