I haven't been influenced at all by this game. My hatred of Xenos, Mutants and Heretics is purely coincidental. As is my utter disregard for human life.
And I don't think this game is aimed at kids quite as young as this article is implying. And even so, it's better that they begin preparing their bodies and souls for the Emperor's Service at a young age.
I just lit that fool up in an Email. Details to follow.
I think this chick is insane. I wrote this:
I found a link to your article on a Games Workshop related message board and had to just let you know how off base you happen to be. I'm really not sure how you reached your conclusions without any great leaps of logic, and some of your claims are dubious at best. For example, your claim to be a long-time Science Fiction fan is a bit hard to believe considering that if you really were you'd recognize several instances of 40k being influenced by classic Science Fiction authors, not least of which are Frank Herbert and HP Lovecraft. Exposing young people to these authors(even indirectly) and authors like them is a great thing. If you looked deeper than the rulebook and actually researched the gaming community you'd see that these issues are discussed constantly. The main problem I had with your article is that you give absolutely no credit to the general public to be able to separate the backstory to a tabletop strategy game from their thoughts on real life. It just seems like you are attempting to stir up a controversy, that's all. Finally, I just wanted to say that it is my opinion that in exposing people to examples of such mindless hatred and ignorance is teaching them how they should NOT behave. T- P.S. It would be cool if you deleted people's email addresses from messages before you posted them, unlike on the page with the form letter that you are attempting to hide behind.
I think I made a reasoned argument and cited specific points for discussion. She responded:
Well T,
You are missing the entire point of the message in my web page. You are not capable of being objective enough to even care to understand where I'm coming from. I have been besieged by countless nasty emails all filled with accusations, insults, and real hatred. I have hated no one. I have attacked no one. I have insulted NO ONE.
I am astounded at the seriousness you all have around your supposed game. It doesn't seem very fun to me. It is you who is not even trying to expand the issue to the greater issue I am addressing. This is not about YOUR game. Your game means nothing. It is a part of a larger reality wherein full grown men see nothing wrong spending hours and even years of their lives submerged in death fantasies.
That you would so rudely approach me with such vindictiveness and such harsh insulting words says more about you than me. I am someone asking questions that makes you and your fellows very uncomfortable. People don't like to think. They like their comfortable habits. And our world is swirling the bowl because people would rather attack someone than hear them out.
Go ahead and have your opinions, and I'll have mine, whether or not you approve. It's not your call what I see or what I think or how much I just care about people or the world we live in. You just keep on playing killing games and being rude to people who wonder if those games are all that good for a society. You must be right and I couldn't be because you just automatically decide these things.
Okay?
Please leave me alone. I have enough to deal with for the simple reason that some foul mouthed gamer couldn't handle the fact that I asked questions that he doesn't like. He made this into a personal attack, not me. He put my email address on a board with millions of people and you sit there and accuse me. You arrogant hypocrite. Shame on you. You can't see anything from someone else's point of view and that sir is a failing on your part, not mine.

I don't think teh intertubes are quite the echo chamber that she was expecting. I don't think I was vindictive or rude though. Unless pointing out fallacies and falsehoods in someone's article is vindictive. And if that's wrong, I don't want to be right!

Dont piss off Emperor Tom! I agree though... pure stupidity. This is a game system that children cant afrord, grasp or are marketed to. Does this mean I am damned to hell for giving an 8th grader a fully painted space marine (AZRAEL no less!!!) I hope so!

lol, Im sure she had alot of idiotic hate mail. instead of reasoned adult responses to her article.
All i can say is that over the years, the most responsible, adult and intelligent kids ive known have generally been the ones that play and have grown up playing these geeky games.

But Chuck, people don't like to think!
I'll be first in line to be a genetically modified supersoldier because Grand Master Jervis has willed it to be so.
