Flames of War Battle Report
German defense of Caen outskirts 07/12/13
Canadian Confident Trained infantry company/2000 pts.
SS-Panzergrenadierkompanie (Fearless Veteran)/2000 pts.
Players: Germans/Jeff M (Antholin), Jeff V (ColHogan). Canadians/Chuck & Temis.
Prepared positions for both sides, with reserves for the Germans.
Round 1: The Canadians pushed towards the outskirts of Caen with 2 Shermans and a Firefly on the left flank, accompanied by towed tank destroyers. 2 squads of universal carriers also moved up the left to start pounding away at the dug in German infantry. While up the middle, 3 Canadian infantry platoons spread out and move forward, and the right flank saw 3 Crocodiles maneuver behind the tree line. German Jagdpanthers were smoked by Canadian mortars, while off shore naval bombardments were called in by a Canadian AOP, a Hurricane joined in the fray with priority air support. The Germans weathered the storm and returned fire with the 2 Jadgpanthers, missing both their marks after having moved out of smoke cover. German Neb & mortar fire put the carriers out of service that were towing the TD guns.
Round 2: The Canadian TD guns, along with the universal carriers and the Sherman tank company open fire on the dug in German infantry protecting the closest objective. The TD guns managed to take out two stands of infantry, while the Jagdpanthers were smoked again by Canadian mortars. Naval artillery & air power was also brought to bear, pinning German infantry and gun teams, taking out one Jagdpanther, halfing the tank destroyer company. The Germans were able to destroy one Sherman, pin down adavancing Canadian infantry with mortar and neb fire, and taking out a few stands. A Panzer IV platoon came on from reserves managing to get two kills on 1 section of universal carriers.
Round 3: Shermans and universal carriers continued to pour on the fire to the dug in German infantry that were protecting the nearest objective, managing to kill a bit more. A brutal bombardment of artillery fire managed to destroy some Panzer IV's and more infantry (including the German 1st CIC). The last reinforcements came on the board, a platoon of Flamm halftracks, taking up defensive positions on the board. Neb and mortar fire continued to wreak havoc on the advancing Canadian infantry, pinning and destroying more stands. The remaining PzIV's were able to knock out the Sherman company, helping to minimize the threat on the left flank.
Round 4: More fire was poured into the German infantry on the left flank objective. They were not yet broken, having made their morale check, but only 3 stands were left of that platoon. Naval artillery fire continued to wreak havoc on the German defenders, leaving mass amounts of wreckage and carnage in the aftermath. The lone Jagdpanther managed to take out the entire platoon of Crocodiles, destroying two outright, with the last failing his morale check and fleeing. The Flamm halftracks advanced along with the sole remaining PzIV and destroyed both sections of universal carriers. Nebs took out two TD guns.
Round 5: The Canadian infantry on the left flank was finally able to advance close enough to the objective, pin down the surviving German infantry, and get off an assault. The Germans pushed back the assault with fire from the 3 remaining teams, assisted by 2 Flamm halftracks. At this point, the Canadians did not have enough left to bring to bear against the Germans, and retreated.
5-2 victory for the SS Panzergrenadiers.
