Hello all, I'm here to check interest in a little thing called Arena of Death. Now what it is.... is a friendly competition where each participant enters one character into a tournament.
Here are the basic rules.
Introduction to AoD
When we have Offical Arenas there will be an Entrant thread, for example the thread title would be "[40K - Official] Heavyweight Entry Thread". Once there are sufficient entrants to start the Arenas, the matches can begin. The Arenas work like this; we start with a number of players that when halved through knockout is still even, so players will always have an opponent. For example, we have 32 entrants. It would then go to 16 in round 2, 8 in round 3, 4 in the semi-final, 2 in the final. This can of course be increased depending on populatiry to 64 then 128.
Once there are sufficent players, I compile the entrants into a suitable word or txt file (normally word pad), adding descriptions of what wargear does and checking statlines to simplify life for our rollers. Players will then be allocated an opponent randomly either by random number generation or another suitable randomization method. Once this is done they are allocated to a roller. Typically each roller would roll 2 or 3 matches. These matches would be rolled up by the roller as soon as they can (After 24 hours the matches may be reassigned unless the roller has contacted me informing me they will be a little late and giving a time when they can roll. Also, if at anytime a roller feels they cannot roll they should give me a PM and we can make other arrangements). The write up is then posted in the match thread with a suitable narrative write up.
When there are enough entrants, I will create a match thread. The thread title would be for example "[40K - Official] Heavyweight Match Thread". The first post in this thread will show you who you have been paired against, as well as the roller assigned to roll it. I ask that you DO NOT post in this thread, this is purely to keep it tidy and easy for people to read through without sifting through a load of irelevant posts. You are more than welcome to use the now obsolete entrant thread for the purpose of banter and other AoD associated taunting (as is the custom). Once a round is complete the defeated entrants are retired and the winners advance, they will then be randomly assigned a new opponent and the process begins again. Once we are down to 2 entrants they will fight for first and second place, the 2 losers from the last round will fight for third place.
Once the arena is finished we will allocate points to people who entered which are then added to the respective totals. Points are awarded as follows; 1 point for entering the arena, 1 point for each win you achieve, additionally 5 points are awarded to the overall winner, 3 points for second place, 2 for third place, and 1 for fourth. Additionally, the names of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place people are recorded in the points standing for each arena.
Normally, once a match thread for one arena goes up, we put an entrant thread up for another arena, so as to keep the arenas running smoothly.
Rollers and what they do
As the name sugests rollers are the people who roll the dice to determine the out come of all the fights in the arena of death, if this sounds like somthing you could do then by all means send a pm to one of the AoD admins.
When an AoD starts all rollers are sent a private message letting them know and asking them to reply if they will be avaliable to roll for it. Normally I need between 4 and 12 rollers per Arena depending on the size, that way noone is given to many matches to roll and so wont feel under pressure to get them all done in time.
I need rollers, if you can play 40k, you can roll. You need no codices and you can still enter any Arenas. All it requires if a few tossed dice, a smidgen of literary skills (to make a decent writeup), and a little honesty to be impartial.
When the match thread goes up each roller who will be rolling for the AoD is sent an email containing the list of matches and who is rolling them and a .txt file with all the entrants, to find the player in the .txt file simply press Ctrl and F to open the find window, then type each of the players names one at a time to get to their entry as easily as possible.
Rules of Arena of Death
The Arena is very simple to participate in: if you can play 40K, you can participate.
In the Arena, you enter a character of a set points value. Example, I sign up for a 100pt (Middleweight) arena contest. I then create a single 100pt or less character (unless the Challenge/Arena places restrictions). So, I might create a 100pt Eldar Farseer. Characters may be selected from any Warhammer 40, 000 army list except Harlequins. In addition, selected characters must have a Toughness value (ie, not be a vehicle).
Then, the 2 character face each other in a match played out by an impartial Roller. The rules are the same as normal Warhammer 40, 000 and use the following procedure.
1. Movement. Very little happens in an AoD movement phase, save some psychic powers (such as Fortune and Veil of Time.
2. Shooting. Fighters may opt to charge, or stand still and rapid fire/fire heavy weapons/shoot twice with pistol. If they chose to stand still, then they will lose any bonus confered by charging (such as the normal +1A, or the bonuses confered by Furious charge.
If both fighters opt to stand still, they will still both move into close combat once shooting is resolved. This will not confer the normal +1 attack or any other means.
Shooting cannot cause Instant death by a weapon’s Strength being double a character’s Toughness. However, special attacks such as a Wraithcannon’s ability to transport a target to the warp still can remove a character as normal. Shooting otherwise can only causes one wound per shot. Characters count as 6" away from each other in the shooting phase.
3. Combat. Both characters count as charging, and fight to the death-all subsequent turns still consist of movement-shooting-combat as normal, so the psychic power Gift of Chaos may be used in the psyker's own shooting phase before close combat takes place.
If both contestants are taken out of action at the same time, the whole match is re-rolled.
Characters are usually selected from the HQ section of an armylist, but any model allowed by the guidelines below is fair game. Special Characters, unless specifically stated, may not be fielded.
Character Creation Format Example
Thanks again to Rasmus for giving us a little leeway. Please follow these rules for character entry. The following example is how I want EVERY character entered. There's a few rules:
1- You must post a statline unless it is unmodified in every way. You may post anything except the exact statline you find in the codex. For example, if you have given your character an invulnerable save, you would write his save as 3+/4++. Adding the 4++ means it's not the same as in the codex, so it's allowed. If you give the character daemonic strength, DO NOT put 5(6) as it's normally done, because then an original statline can be seen. Instead, simply put S6. If you modify the statline in any way, please post it! If, for example, I took an Eldar Farseer, and gave him nothing that would adjust his statline, you would post your character except for the statline, and I'll fill it in when I make the TXT file. Everybody understand? Breaking the rules will have consequences.
2- DO NOT post what wargear does, or its points costs. I just want the name of the wargear, such as "Master crafted power sword". Always post your character's total, but not individual costs. If you constantly enter the wrong total points value (I WILL check them), you will be warned and then punished.
3- All characters should comply with the following format:
Lord Skorthius of the Black Legion
WS5 BS5 S6 T4 W4 I5 A4 Ld9 Sv2+/5++
Chaos Lord
Terminator Armour
Dark Blade
Combi-bolter
Daemonic Essence
Daemonic Mutation
Total: 143 pts
Tactics: (Anything specific, like when to use acts of faith, what drug options etc.)
Appearance: (Optional, the roller may use it)
Notice how the terminator armor, dark blade, daemonic essence and daemonic mutation changed the statline, so it's allowable.

FAQ
Q. How do followers/drones/grots/etc work in the arena?
A. Any follower that gives your character a stat or ability increase may be purchased but will not take part in the arena itself, (only the characters fight). So for example, an Inquisitor can take a warrior which will increase his ws and a familiar which gives him an extra psychic power and +1 initative. But taking an acolyte wont allow him to take a wound on it, nor would taking a chirurgeon allow him to ignore a wound suffered. Tau shield drones are not allowed, in their case the shield they project is around themselves and they physically get in the way of incoming attacks. Generally just think of it as it is one model, one character, nothing else, so any effect which is gained by purchasing them is allowed, any effect they themselves generate isnt.
Q. What shooting/ranged attacks can still kill outright.
A. No shooting of strength double opponents toughness can kill them outright, however. Wriath cannons can still banish the target to the warp on a 6.
Q. How does the Word of the Emperor psychic power work in AoD?
A. If the opponent fails the leadership test they do not recieve the +1 attack nor any other bonus for charging, while the caster still would.
Q. How does the Sanctuary power work in AoD?
A. As you must always be in combat following the shooting phase, the power sanctuary will work different, it will only stop the daemon getting any charging bonus, like the +1 attack and furious charge.
Q. How many times can I enter an AoD?
A. Entry's are limited to one per person, so in effect you have one entry per ip address. No more. Anyone caught evading this so they can have more than one entry will be removed from the AoD, this is meant to be a fun thing, not the kind of thing you make loads of entrys so you can win.
-Any questions, please ask.
Is this something you guys would like to do? All it really requires is for you to build one character, write a bit of fluff for background and thats it. Id also ask, any volunteers to be rollers?
