One of the changes in V3 is that 8 cm mortars can now fire direct. However, the only army's units been done for is the Germans, Russians, Finns, Romanians and the Polish Home army.
There is currently a debate on the forum if all 8cm mortars should gain direct fire, all of them have some flavor of them and they are very much the same(of the 5 army's mentioned the only difference is that the Finns, Germans and Romanians can fire smoke ).
The question is do you wait till BF issues up dated handbooks(if they ever do) or do you allow all army's to use them?

One would think that someone from BF would register in soon with an answer. They seem to be pretty good about that.
Without that I would think that we should look at the exact wording in the rulebook to see if it seems clear that the intention was to have all 8 cm mortars direct fire.
As a quick reaction, it doesn't seem to make sense that some can and some can't, Judging by the ones who can it must have been an Eastern Front thing to fire direct!! The Germans then applied the tactic to all fronts but the Western Allies never caught on??

Ah if it were only that simple rules are on page 116 they sort of hint that all mortars are different even though all the ones in GW and RB are the same(including the Polish ones that were hand made). Further among the sample weapons , on page 116, is a US 60mm Mortar which can direct fire link is below have fun there are 12 pages of posts www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=126&aff=3&aft=538661&afv=topic&afpgj=12#959891Oh and by the by All bunker Busters are now Breakthrough guns see page 100 the complication is that some Breakthrough guns are not Bunker Busters like the IS-2 and the ISU-122. The person who started the thread seems to have over looked that. For what it's worth I think all 8cm mortars should be able to fire direct As far as BF ruleing on this don't hold your breath they have yet to rule if a Russian infiltration can do it and they use the prepared postion rules to be considered dug in and gtg and concealed in the open on the the first turn

I suspected it might be a looooooong thread.
I also think that it makes sense for all 8cm mortars to direct fire (at least until BF tells us otherwise).
As a Russian player, I would obviously have my unbiased opinion of their inflitration rule. One of the reasons I have not yet tried it is that we need to come up with a house rule on that one.

Maybe we need a house rule on house rules too!

If You think the one on 8 cm mortars and Breakthrough guns is long wait till you look at the one on Infiltration it's 5 times longer
