With Emperor Edition just around the corner (see my other post regarding that!), I thought it would be a good time to go over our plans for L5R at Triple Play. Before I do that, let me just plug the Endless Road (http://www.endlessroad.ca/forum/), a forum for North-East based L5R players, and the official AEG forum (http://alderac.com/forum/). Both those boards are much higher volume than here and are worth visiting regularly.
Going forward, we'll pretty much be playing Emperor Edition only. Our organized play falls into three categories: our casual fortnightly get-together, constructed events, and draft/sealed deck events.
Our casual night is every other Thursday, and we're looking to restart it this coming Thursday, January 19th. We meet at the store from around 6pm through to 9 or 10, and usually just play some friendly games. The idea is to give people experience and fun games, and as such there are no restrictions on using proxies - ideally they should be printed out, but as long as both players know what the card is intended to do, it's all good. Occasionally, if there is interest, we run drafts on Thursday nights. Information will be posted regularly both here and on the Endless Road.
Our monthly constructed tournament is usually held on the third or fourth Sunday of the month. It starts at midday or 1pm, and runs until 5 or 6. There is an entrance fee of $5, but all money raised goes back in to the prize pool as store credit. In addition, we give away participation promos to everyone who attends. As this is a more formal tournament, proxies are not generally allowed (although the next two months are an exception - again, see my other post), but L5R players are a sharing bunch, so if you find yourself in need of cards to finish off a deck, feel free to ask! We can usually help fulfil any card needs.
Occasionally the monthly constructed tournament will be replaced by a release or pre-release event. These events are almost always sealed deck tournaments, meaning each player purchases a starter deck and a set number of boosters and builds a deck from those cards alone. Prizes are provided in the form of exclusive participation promos and extra store credit, and of course each player gets to keep all the cards they open.
Drafts are slightly different. Each player purchases a set number of boosters (usually four or five), and then drafts a card pool to construct a deck from. At the end of the tournament, all the rares drafted are put back into a prize pool, and players select from them based on final position. We have found this to be the fairest way of distributing cards...for example, in a six player draft, the player who finishes last will get no worse than the sixth best rare opened, and will get to select his first card before the winner chooses a second. All other non-rare cards drafted by a player are his/hers to keep.
If anybody has any questions, please don't hesitate to PM me on this or any other board (my user name tends to be the same), or email me at daigotsu13 at gmail dot com.
Thanks!
Mark
