You might not be able to totally prevent the callidus' assault, but you can effect the direction that they assault from and possibly even the direction in which they can consolidate in and all that jazz.
You'd also only have to do it for either the first couple rounds, and using sneaky running techniques you can shoot at vehicles and then run your screening unit back into position.
